Cruise companies are anxious to fill the remaining berths on outstanding cruises from this year. The newspapers have loads of adverts on their holiday pages offering great discounts. If you have any holiday to use, then a cruise could be just the answer

Some of the best deals can be found when you can travel at short notice. Do you fancy a 14 night Caribbean cruise, including flights at 899 pounds per person? That was one I found on a web site within two minutes. Or cruise and stay Caribbean/Vegas with dance lessons included, next August. This is on offer for 499 pounds per person, again including flights.

Of course such deals do sound marvellous, and they can be. However, one has to read the small print. Often the only cabins available are the cheapest, most basic ones, or perhaps the price is not fully inclusive as far as meals go. These points need to be checked out to see if you really have got a deal.

Normally, one will be expected to pay extra for drinks, gratuities and excursions, so if you have an on-board spend as part of the deal it can be very useful. All the extras mentioned can be paid for from an on-board spend. You will then be left with more money to buy souvenirs from your excursions.

People tend to overlook the fact that cruises are not necessarily at sea. Any major waterway can cope with a cruise ship, although they tend to be smaller ships with fewer facilities. Again many bargains can be found on line and in the papers. In Europe there are both river cruises and fjord cruises available, and the latter often offer the chance to see the stunning Northern lights.

Whichever type of cruise you fancy, someone, somewhere will offer it. River cruises are fantastic for getting to the heart of a country as many capital cities are built on rivers. You will see miles of wonderful scenery drift past and you will also have the chance to visit major cities en route.

On a sea cruise you may not see much scenery, unless you are following a coastline, visiting various ports en route. However, you will have chance to try out the attractions on board, which generally include a swimming pool or two, and a spa. You will not be lost for things to do, but if you just like watching the sea, you may spot deep water fish.

Whatever your fancy, do make sure you read the small print very carefully. Also, check things again when making the booking and get everything in writing if possible. You don’t want to find out that the cruise deal you thought was a bargain holiday was anything but!
