Down South City Way
Most tourists are familiar with the charms of old San Francisco — from the fog to Chinatown to the Transamerica pyramid — but what about old South San Francisco? Now, it should be made clear that South City, as the locals call it, is not a part of that town Tony Bennett immortalized. Nope, South San Francisco is an independent city all unto its own. In fact, it’s not even connected to the City proper.
South San Francisco, or South City or the Industrial City as it has aptly come to be called, is home to a number of industrial and commercial companies. From United Airlines to Genentech to See’s Candies, South City is perfectly zoned and situated to serve as a haven for big business. It boasts a prime location, being adjacent to SFO airport. Moreover, with the extension of the BART rail, South City property values are sure to soar.
The city is home to an annual holiday display of lights. That is, the affluent neighborhood of Parkway Estates puts on a formidable display of Christmas lights for the enjoyment of the entire Bay Area. After a night of seeing the lights, many people flock to Bertolucci’s restaurant. This popular eatery is as old as South City, dating back to the first decade of the 20th Century.
Its proximity to San Francisco makes South City a preferred destination for businessmen and vacationing families alike. Location, location, location. Rather than contend with the nightmarish traffic and congestion of San Francisco, many prefer the quiet, suburban environment of South City. Public transport and some BART access makes getting to the popular tourist locales relatively easy.
If peace of mind and ease of access is paramount, South San Francisco is tough to beat. Indeed, we are all well-aware of the charms of San Francisco, but few of us want to have to contend with its daily crush. Landing at SFO, a decent hotel is easily accessible. The entire bay Area is easily accessed, for that matter. The secret is out: South City is the place to be when visiting the peninsula.
